From the silver screen to the small screen modern day brides are finding a hint of inspiration from their favorite screen stars. In honor of Oscar season, airing March 2, 2014, we’re taking inspiration from our favorite films to pair with our collections. We’ve narrowed down a list of top 5 on-screen wedding moments to lend inspiration to the bride-to-be. Through a brief survey (friends and family) we present our top 5 on-screen weddings and paired with looks from our collections. Tell us what your favorite moments are in the comments and let us know which ones inspire you.
1. Father of the Bride (1950)
A classic tale of a father (Spencer Tracy) dealing with the emotional and financial pain of marrying of his only daughter (Elizabeth Taylor). Elizabeth Taylor is effortless as the bride to be instilling the excitement of the hopes and dreams of every bride to be. Her classic white satin gown accented by lace throughout designed by the costume designer Helen Rose was estimated to cost $1,500 at the time. In a nod to everything old is new again we have noticed a lot of vintage inspired designs trending down the bridal runways for 2014. This classic fairytale wedding will have a place in the hearts of fans and brides to be for years to come.
We recommend the Grace dress from our Signature Classics collection (shown to the left) to compliment the classic bride alongside her classically dressed wedding party.
2. The Sound of Music (1965)
“How do you solve a problem like Maria?” Julie Andrews soars to stardom as the governess Maria turning the iron clad heart of Captain Von Trapp (Christopher Plummer) to once again believe in love. This is the top pic for owner and chief designer Annie Sokoloff of Anna Elyse and Annie Girl designs. The chapel length veil streaming down the aisle as Maria floats down the cathedral to wed Captain Von Trapp brings tears to her eyes every time. This wedding inspiration is for the girl who dreams of an estate wedding of grandiose proportions suitable for royalty.
We recommend the Sophisticate style (left) in the Signature Classics collection to compliment the elegant theme of “The Sound of Music” for your bridal party.
3. The Princess Bride (1987)
“As you wish.” Words every husband should live by, right ladies? 😉 A classic fairytale of a Princess (Robin Wright) promised to an evil Prince Humperdinck (Chris Sarandon) while she believes her true love Westley (Carry Elwes) lost his life to the evil Dread Pirate Roberts. Robin Wright as Princess Buttercup brings all the notes of a renaissance bride to life. Her dress invokes classic style elements of medieval courtship that lend romantic inspiration for the modern bride.
For the romantic bride we recommend the Unzipped collection seen here (left) in Hanky Panky for a fit flattering to all of your bridal party.
4. Sex and the City (2008)
When Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) sets out to finally marry her elusive beau, Mr. Big (Chris North) — you can count on one thing — it will be larger than her shoe collection! With a custom gown designed by Vivienne Westwood and an exclusive wedding shoot by Vogue Carrie appears to be living every brides dream. Simplicity is overrated when it comes to a New York wedding.
To compliment the designer bride we recommend the Grace style in our Signature Classics collection available in multiple shades. Selected here (left) in fire red to compliment Samantha’s (Kim Cattrall) look at right.
5. Bridesmaids (2011)
We’ve all been there, right? Being selected as a bridesmaid is an act of passage for the most stalwart of friendships. Navigating the gauntlet of the bridal party, showers, bachelorette weekends and other unforeseen expenses can drive a girl mad. In the case of Annie Walker (Kristen Wiig) her humility knows no bounds as she experiences the ups and downs of acting as your best friend’s mad of honor.
We recommend the short and sweet Jackie O style from our Signature Classics collection. Shown to the left in Lilac silk dupioni.
